Therapy for Burnout, Stress, and Executive Function Challenges
Burnout can develop when ongoing stress, pressure, or emotional demands begin to overwhelm your capacity to cope. It isn't just stress. Burnout is what happens when your mind and body have been stretched too far for too long. It develops from prolonged exposure to mental, emotional, and/or physical stress without enough time or space to recoup, and can be particularly troublesome for neurodivergent people. Many professionals, parents, and students find themselves feeling exhausted, disconnected, or unable to recover even after rest.
Signs You May Be Experiencing Burnout
Symptoms can be:
-
Persistent exhaustion, even after rest
-
Feeling emotionally drained or numb
-
Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
-
Irritability or increased frustration
-
Loss of motivation or enjoyment in work or daily life
-
Feeling disconnected from others
-
A sense of being constantly overwhelmed
-
Feeling foggy
-
Being unable to focus or follow through - perhaps even on simple tasks
-
Feeling detached from self/ work/ others
-
Shame, Guilt, Embarrassment
-
Sense of no longer being able to "push through"
-
Not being able to pinpoint why everything feels heavier than it used to.
Burnout is often associated with decreased executive function and tends to be more prevalent in neurodivergent people. Executive function is the ability to make plans, have good judgment and insight for decision-making, regulate emotions, learn and recall information, concentrate or focus. For those who are juggling caregiving, professional, and household responsibilities without adequate rest or support, burnout is a serious concern.
Burnout in Professionals, Parents & Students
Burnout affects people in many different life roles, especially high-performing ones when expectations are high and responsibilities feel constant. When people feel pressure to perform at a high level without adequate support, such as parents and caregivers carrying emotional and logistical responsibilities that leave little space for rest, personal needs, or recovery, or students and young adults facing academic pressure, uncertainty about the future, or trying to balance school, work, and relationships, it is a recipe for burnout. Burnout is especially common for women and neurodivergent people. Burnout often overlaps with anxiety, ADHD, or relationship strain, and many clients benefit from exploring these areas in therapy.
At Kayda Health, we support individuals navigating burnout across many life contexts - processing the roles, old scripts, deep emotional states, and core beliefs that contribute to burnout while building stronger resources and systems to manage in day to day coping.
Our Approach to Burnout Therapy
It's so important to do the emotional work to process burnout as non-defining of who you are; it isn't a failure, but it IS a sign your system has carried too much for too long and needs a reset.
Burnout recovery is not simply about reducing stress in the moment. It often involves understanding deeper patterns related to expectations, boundaries, identity, and emotional regulation as well as resetting the nervous system and even recalibrating your life-compass.
Our counsellors use evidence-based approaches that may include:
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to shift the thoughts and behaviours that perpetuate burnout.
-
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) to support better distress tolerance, increase interpersonal skills (ie. boundary setting), mindful self awareness (enhanced insight and judgement), and emotional regulation.
-
EMDR to help process deep core beliefs, old patterns or traumas that may have led to people pleasing, a lack of worth, and more.
-
Solution-Focused Therapy to find a strength-based way of moving forward.
-
Mindfulness & nervous system regulation strategies to shift how the body experiences and holds on to stress.
-
Practical problem-solving and life balance planning - to create new systems and ways of being that actually fit and lean towards a life that feels truly worth living.
Therapy is collaborative and tailored to each person’s experience. Some clients need space to process emotional exhaustion, while others benefit from developing practical tools for managing stress and creating sustainable change - our team meets people where they are at.
